Stephen King is the king of the horror writers. The prolific writer, who has 58 novels to his name has had many of them adapted into movies or TV series. Here’s every single Stephen King movie and TV series currently on Netflix across the world.
This list includes all Netflix regions including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and more.
Stephen King’s Sleepwalkers (1992)
Regions Streaming: United Kingdom
Sleepwalkers wassurprisingly not based off any works by Stephen King. Instead, the king of horror took to writing the film himself, sadly the film wasn’t well received by critics. Still, any work from Stephen King deserves a watch regardless.
The Plot
In a small Midwestern town, a teenage virgin becomes the target of new arrivals Mary Brady and her son, who aren’t what they appear to be.
Carrie (2013)
Regions Streaming: Australia, Belgium, France, Italy, Netherlands, South Korea + 4 More Countries
The latest iteration and the first of Carrie on our list, this is the 2nd remake of Stephen King’s classic novel. Chloe Grace Moretz was given her time to shine and arguably the movie is much better than what most give it credit for.
The Plot
A misfit teenager gets back at the classmates who’ve bullied her by unleashing her newfound supernatural powers and creating havoc at the prom.
Stephen King’s A Good Marriage (2014)
Regions Streaming: Japan, South Korea
Based on the novella from Stephen King’s book Full Dark, No Stars another popular title the Netflix Original 1922 was also taken from the novella. While A Good Marriage is apart of King’s most recent work it is certainly one of the lesser known titles in his collection of adaptations.
The Plot
With a serial killer on the loose and a stranger stalking her family, a woman unearths a sinister secret that threatens her marriage and her life.
Under the Dome (3 Seasons)
Regions Streaming: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, France, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, South Korea + 16 More Countries
SIMPSONS DID IT. We may hear you screaming to the comments section and yes you are right Simpsons indeed ‘did it first.’ That being said it was inevitable that the 2009 sci-fi novel would be adapted for a film or series. Sadly the series was canceled after 3 outings so a conclusive end was never given to the fans.
The Plot
Under the Dome follows the residents of Chester’s Mill, Maine, as they find their small town suddenly cut off from the rest of the world by a transparent dome. While some people start to panic, a small group of citizens led by Armyveteran Dale Barbara tries to maintain some semblance of peace and order, while also attempting to learn the truth about the mysterious barrier, the purpose behind it and, most importantly, how to escape it.
Haven (5 Seasons)
Regions Streaming: USA, Greece
Sadly another series based on a Stephen King novel that was canceled deep into the story. With 5 seasons on its belt there is still plenty to watch but don’t expect to get a conclusive end to the series anytime soon.
The Plot
Residents of Haven, Maine, are plagued by supernatural afflictions. To reveal the truth, FBI agent Audrey Parker must delve into her own strange past.
The Mist (2007)
Regions Streaming: Belgium, Japan, Netherlands, Sweden
Arguably one of the better adaptations of Stephen King’s extensive work resulted in the author praising the film for its bold ending.
The Plot
After a brutal storm pounds a small town, the residents discover a malevolent mist that hangs over their homes, killing anyone who remains outside.
Carrie (1976)
Regions Streaming: UK
The original Carrie was the very first of King’s giant bibliography to be adapted into a feature film. Easily the most successful of the 3 iterations of the novel, the film was well received by fans and critics alike to which the film was even nominated for multiple Academy awards!
The Plot
An outcast teen with telekinetic ability lashes out with her deadly power when the high school ‘in crowd’ torments her with a sick joke at the prom.
Secret Window (2004)
Regions Streaming: Canada, France, India, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland
Johnny Depp was deep into his popularity after his success from Pirates of the Caribbean. Sadly the adaptation would not receive the same prestige as its novella counterpart. Still with a few twists and turns along the way it’s certainly worth a watch.
The Plot
A successful writer in the midst of a painful divorce is stalked at his remote lake house by a would-be scribe who accuses him of plagiarism.
The Shining (1980)
Regions Streaming: Australia, Belgium, France, India, Israel, Russia, South Korea + 19 More Countries
One such title that has been etched into the core of Pop Culture is Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of The Shining. Infamously Stephen King hated the adaptation of one of his most beloved novels but the film itself terrified audiences and was universally praised by critics. The Shining must be on your list of top 100 films to see before you die.
The Plot
Jack Torrance becomes winter caretaker at the isolated Overlook Hotel in Colorado, hoping to cure his writer’s block. He settles in along with his wife, Wendy, and his son, Danny, who is plagued by psychic premonitions. As Jack’s writing goes nowhere and Danny’s visions become more disturbing, Jack discovers the hotel’s dark secrets and begins to unravel into a homicidal maniac hell-bent on terrorizing his family.
Mercy(2014)
Regions Streaming: Canada
This film only just makes the list considering it is a very loose adaptation of Stephen King’s novel “Gramma.” The film completely panned and you can be forgiven for not realizing this is based on the work of the King of horror.
The Plot
When they move into their ailing grandmother’s house to help take care of her, two young brothers discover terrifying secrets about her true nature.
The Mist (Season 1)
Regions Streaming: Worldwide
There was plenty of hype surrounding the series adaptation of The Mist but sadly it failed to impress fans critics. The series only lasted for one outing before it was given the boot by Paramount.
The Plot
After an eerie mist rolls into a small town, the residents must battle the mysterious mist and its threats, fighting to maintain their morality and sanity.
Carrie (2002)
Regions Streaming: UK
The final iteration of Carrie on this list, the 2002 adaptation is the least discussed of the 3 and the less said about it the better. You’re best watching the 1976 or 2013 version to satisfy your need to watch to watch a violent adolescent powerful teenager.
The Plot
A misfit teenager gets back at the classmates who’ve bullied her by unleashing her newfound supernatural powers and creating havoc at the prom.
Sometimes They Come Back (1991)
Regions Streaming: UK
The early 90’s horror film never made it the theatres and was released a TV-horror film for CBS. Stephen King had no involvement in the writing of the film but it is based on his work on the novel of the same name. Arguably one of his lesser-known titles, a very hit and miss movie.
The Plot
High school teacher Jim Norman returns to his quiet hometown only to find himself haunted by spirits spawned by a tragedy from his childhood.
The Mangler (1995)
Regions Streaming: Japan
The performed disastrously bad at the box office and made only $1.1 Million across the 800 screens in the US. Across the water, the film also bombed in Europe. The film was also adapted from the novel of the same name but the screenplay clearly missed his talent.
The Plot
When blood splatters on a laundry press, the possessed machine turns on its operators. It falls on the local investigator to exorcize the demon.
1922 (2017) Netflix Original
Regions Streaming: Worldwide
Certainly one of the better adaptations of Stephen King’s work, 1922 is a suspenseful horror/thriller that left many viewers with an even greater fear of Rats. 1922 was adapted from the story of the same name taken from the collection of novels Full Dark, No Stars.
The Plot
Rancher Wilfred James conspires to murder his wife Arlette for financial gain and convinces his teenage son Henry to participate. Soon events transpire and his wife’s vengeful spirits return to enact her revenge from beyond the grave.
IT (2017)
Regions Streaming: Australia, Japan, Sweden
Many were apprehensive about the release of 2017’s IT. Those fears were cast aside after an amazing performance at the box office making over $700 Million worldwide. Highly praised for its blend of Horror and Comedy many fans worldwide can’t wait for the impending sequel. Still, the TV-Movie classic which starred Tim Curry is far superior.
The Plot
As kids vanish throughout town, a group of outcasts must face their biggest fears as well as a murderous, terrifying and seemingly invincible clown.
Misery (1990)
Regions Streaming: UK
Kathy Bates more than earned her Oscar for portraying the terrifying Annie Wilkes. The film is a masterclass of suspense, storytelling and will have you on end of your seat! Misery keeps company and she expects yours too.
The Plot
A former nurse saves her favorite writer from a blizzard but morphs from nurturer to sadistic jailer when she learns he plans to kill off her heroine.
Cell (2016)
Regions Streaming: Argentina, Brazil, France, India, Japan, Mexico
Cell was panned by critics but it has managed to gather its own little cult following in spite of this. Stephen King helped write the screenplay alongside screenwriter Adam Alleca. This film is actually the second of Stephen King’s adaptations to star John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson after 2008’s 1408. The premise of the film is very thought-provoking and still deserves a watch despite what the critics say.
The Plot
A desperate man tries to save his wife and son when a mysterious signal remaps the minds of cell phone users and turns them into rabid killers.
Heartsin Atlantis (2001)
Regions Streaming: Sweden
Interestingly the story of Hearts in Atlantis is tied with Stephen King’s popular The Dark Tower series. The story is based on the short story Low Men in Yellow Coats and the name Hearts of Atlantis was taken from the title name of the book. Sadly the film failed miserably at the box office.
The Plot
A man with second sight rents a room from a widow and befriends her son. The boy learns of the man’s powers and the danger he’s trying to escape.
Dolores Claiborne (1995)
Regions Streaming: Australia, Sweden
Dolores Claiborne is not critically acclaimed but Time magazine had once given it a spot in their top ten list of greatest Stephen King adaptations. Kathy Bates would once again take the lead role but despite a great performance did not receive any accolades for the role. She has since given an interview to express her favorite performance was that of the titular Dolores.
The Plot
When a Maine housekeeper is accused of murdering her elderly employer, her estranged daughter, a New York reporter, is determined to find answers.
Christine (1983)
Regions Streaming: Belgium, France, Greece, India, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, UK, USA
The cult classic was directed by legendary director John Carpenter, despite lacking in numbers at the box office the film has since become a cult classic. Christine is based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name. Both novel and film were released in the same year with production handled by Columbia Pictures.
The Plot
A geeky student restores a classic 1958 Plymouth Fury but once he gets behind the wheel, his newfound confidence turns to furious arrogance.
Gerald’s Game (2017) Netflix Original
Regions Streaming: Worldwide
The first of Stephen King’s novels to be adapted by Netflix and also the first title that Mike Flanagan directed for the streaming service. Gerald’s Game was written by Stephen King in 1992 and was seen as unfilmable. Mike Flanagan certainly turned that though on its head. The pyshcological horror certainly deserves a watch and is definitely one of the better Original titles available.
The Plot
On a vacation to their isolated lake house married couple Jessie and Gerald engage a kinky sex game. After Gerald dies of a heart attack, Jessie is left tied to the bed and must figure out a way to escape her handcuffs. As fatigue and dehydration creep in Jessie begins to hallucinate.
Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Regions Streaming: Canada, France, Japan
The word of IMDb is not gospel but The Shawshank Redemption is repeatedly at the top of many ‘best films of all time’ lists. Having released in the same year as Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction, it sadly did not earn the recognition it deserved to which it also only made $58.3 Million at the box office. It would later gain recognition due to the amount of VHS and DVD sales for the title. The Shawshank Redemption is a masterpiece and deserves to be watched multiple times!
The Plot
Andy Dufresne is sentenced to two life sentences in Shawshank Prison after he is framed for the murder of his wife and her lover. As Andy settles into his new life in the prison he soon grows close with long term inmate Ellis ‘Red’ Reddington. Using his talents as a banker Andy eventually becomes involved with a money laundering operation by the prison warden. As the pressure of life in prison gets harder you either get busy living or get busy dying.
The Green Mile (1999)
Regions Streaming: France, Germany, Netherlands, Greece, Italy, Spain, Switzerland
If you haven’t watched The Green Mile then it immediately needs to go on your list of films to see before you die. The Green Mile is arguably only second best to that of The Shawshank Redemption. Michael Clarke Duncan was phenomenal playing the role of the gentle giant John Coffey. Despite not winning awards his performance is still critically acclaimed.
The Plot
When a prison guard discovers that a death row inmate possesses mysterious powers, he tries desperately to prevent the condemned man’s execution.
