@AshleyTheDiva thank you! You the GOAT!
I had no clue Chiquis was also molested by a female family member. With all she is been through it’s amazing she’s as together as she is. I like her, but I still ain’t forget about when she dropped the N word.
I have to check and see if I am caught up on the Rivera’s, I just found out her and Lorenzo broke up.
Rosie always seemed a little off to me so I’m not surprised her and Chiquis are beefing

*This is probably going to long winded, as I've learned in the past few days that when it comes to the Riveras nothing is succinct. But I like context, so please bear with me.
Thanks. I decided to learn Spanish back in March when we first put under quarantine. For multiple reasons, but mainly because I was bored and hate doing nothing, it's easier than Italian, more widely spoken, and I want to know what Latinos be saying, and if they're talking about me! So since I lost my job, and classes moved to online, I started to teach myself Spanish, and then decided to minor in it when classes started back up in the fall. I've been learning for about 11 months, and I'm roughly conversational, and can understand like 60-70 percent of what is said depending on the dialect spoken. It's mostly Mexican Spanish and Castilian Spanish that I understand. I'm no good with Caribbean or Chilean Spanish! So, I've been using the Riveras as part of my studies. I like how they mix English and Spanish, so I started implementing mixing my English and Spanish to ease me into being comfortable speaking Spanish. I'm also able to better understand Spanish articles and interviews they do in Spanish, so I plan to take what I'm learning about them, and apply it here and translate it to English!
Okay, now onto my history with the Riveras. I didn't know who they were until Jenni died. I was on the Us Weekly site and saw the headline about her being missing, and a possible plane crash, and I loosely followed the story, until they found the plane and her and everybody else's remains, and even though I didn't know who she was before, my heart sank. I was reading that she had children, and so I was hoping by a miracle she would be found, even if she was badly injured, I was hoping she would still be alive. After Christmas, but before New Years 2012, MTV2 was running a marathon on "I Love Jenni" in her honor, so I decided to watch it. I can't remember which scene I saw first, but two scenes stuck with me. One of them was Jenni with Jaylah, and it warmed my heart. You could tell how much she really loved Jaylah and how much Jaylah loved her, and it made me sad because I knew Jaylah wouldn't remember her growing up.
The other scene was when Jenni thought there was a ghost in the house.
I really liked the show and their family. When I was a kid, my mom worked in a program in a public school called "Family Education" that helped immigrant families learn English, become naturalized citizens, and earn their GEDs. My mom was had her own classroom where she was in charge of the kids of the parents while the parents studied. I can't remember her official title. But the parents and kids were always really drawn to my mom, and she became friends with a lot the families, and I became friends with the kids. The Riveras reminded me of one the Mexican families that we got close with. The parents were learning English, and would come over and play spades and dominos with my mom and her cousins on the weekends, and that's how their English improved. They even learned slang! This was the late 90s-early 2000's, BTW, so I would get a kick out of hearing them say "Das da bomb" in the accents! The mom and her sister would always bring over tamales, tacos, etc... They never came empty handed. So watching "I Love Jenni" was kind of nostalgic for me because they reminded me of that family.
Flash forward a few months later, and Chiquis N-word scandal happens. And I'm eww, canceled, bye. So, i moved on from them and didn't think of them anymore. This was 2013.
Flash forward to summer 2019. It's a weekday I'm off from work and had planned to go to the gym, but it was pouring down raining, so I decide to work out at home. I like to watch TV while working out, so I'm skimming through OnDemand trying to find something, and i land on Universo. I had never heard of Universo, so I clicked on it, and saw it was basically Universal for Latinos, and then I see "I Love Jenni" and I was like Ooh, I remember that show, and decided to watch it while working out. The show had me dying laughing. And I was thinking to myself, why did I stop watching it? I had completely forgot about Chiquis and the N-Word scandal.
So, I decided to research the family, and see where they were now. I found the spin-off "The Riveras" and got into that, which lead me to search Chiquis, Jacqie, Jenicka, Mikey, and Johnny. Chiquis, being the oldest and more prominent one I of course searched her first, and then the N-word scandal came up. When I was watching the show I hadn't even realized it was her, and that she was the same chick from the ICDC commercials. I had completely forgot about it. So I watched the video of her saying the N word for the first time. I cringed, but it wasn't what I was expecting. She said "Y'all my n*ggas". I just... Yikes. It was in such poor taste, and I was like Nooooo!!!!! And then I saw her follow up video. At the time she was living with Gerald. She apologized, and said she always said it around Gerald, and Gerald basically co-signed her saying it, so she didn't think twice. She said that she was sorry, and never meant to hurt people, and that she didn't mean it in an offensive way, yadadada. So, I rolled my eyes, whatever and moved on. So, I definitely side-eyed Gerald. Like, why didn't you tell her that wasn't cool? I've had non-black, ethnic friends say the N-word, and I'll cut that shit off at the head. And they've apologized, and it was never an issue again.
So my perspective of Chiquis saying it was, it was wrong, and she shouldn't have said it, but it wasn't THAT bad, and I honestly don't think she had any malicious intent. And I've seen soooo many people in the Black community hive people like J.Lo, Fat Joe, and Big Pun a pass for using it, and many other white rappers. Fat Joe uses it like it's going out of style. And then you have racist white people who use it with the hard r. And in my opinion, for Chiquis it was misstep in poor taste, and she should be able to move on from it. I've heard people say way worse. So I was like whatever, I don't like it, but I'll give her a second chance.
Now, I'm the kind of person who believes in forgiveness, and believe people can change. And now that we're in the climate of cancel culture, that's not exactly a popular opinion. But I would hate if people constantly judged me for things I did in my past, that don't represent who I am now. Like, if someone was like "I don't like Ashley, because she did this when she was 21, and then this when she 24, and so on." I'm a Christian. I am not perfect, and I am not one of those holier than thou people, but I like to extend grace to people whether they're famous or not. I've made amends with people in my life over the years, and I've been forgiven for some shitty things I've said and done, and don't want to relive. So who am I not to forgive somebody else, and to hold their past against them? Especially if their current actions don't reflect who they are now, and they've shown growth.
So, I'm doing more reading up on the Riveras and I discover that Chiquis and Jenni weren't on speaking terms when she died. That shocked me, so then I decided to read Chiquis' memoir, coincidentally titled "Forgiveness". It's so crazy because I was in a Bible study that summer, and we were discussing forgiveness, grace, and mercy. So as I'm reading her book, my heart broke. Everything she's been through, and she still goes through life with a smile on her face. Her mom falsely accused her of sleeping with her stepfather, which I will NEVER believe, and then kicks her out of the will. She kept trying to reach out to her mom, writing her letters and emails, and Jenni kept shutting her down. During this time she went to Vegas with Gerald and either Dayanna or her cousin and they were in the club, and she was like "Something doesn't feel right, something's off lets go." So they go back to the hotel, and she gets the news that her mother's plane is missing. Without hesitation she hops in the car, and speeds down the highway form Vegas to Long Beach to her grandma's house. After Jenni died, and Rosie had custody of the kids, Chiquis asked Rosie for custody. She was like "Those are my babies. I'm not gonna fight you for my mom's money or anything like that, I just want custody of Jenicka and Johnny."
Jenni and Rosie treated her like shit, and even Jacqie turned her back on her, and she still came back to help them heal and mend, and take care of the kids while she was going through her own trauma. And then, she built a career for herself, and was able to forgive her family. And she always honors Jenni. She said everything that happened up until Jenni's death was lesson that taught her how to live without her Mom and be her own person. She says she has no animosity that she's not in the will, because it makes her hustle harder. I was like now that is a strong woman. She's been through so much, and I just found her story so inspiring. She went from sleeping on a mattress on a cold garage floor with her mom, raising her siblings (Johnny sometimes calls her mom), helping build her mother's career, molestation, and being estranged from her mother at the time of her death, to where she is now. And she seems to have a really good heart.
So, I know that was super long, but I say all that to say that I think all of that outweighs, her N-word scandal. And she seems like the person to learn and grow, and I don't think she has a malicious bone in her body. I wish she hadn't of said it, but I won't hold it against her forever.
